From Milton in South Uist, Màiri MacMillan was brought up surrounded by Gaelic language, culture, music, and song. She comes from a family with a strong Gaelic background. Gaelic is her first language and Gaelic songs, and traditions, are always an important part of family life.
Màiri began singing from an early age at local Mods and community ceilidhs. It was at Fèis Tìr a Mhurainn that she was first taught by Iseabail T MacDonald. Iseabail T taught her many Gaelic songs, introducing her to recordings of many tradition bearers of the past century.
Màiri has had opportunities to sing and teach Gaelic songs throughout Scotland and been fortunate to travel to Ireland and USA to sing in Gaelic. Màiri won the Traditional Gold Medal at the 2007 Mod in Lochaber. She is now living in Glasgow.
