Ùrarachd – Creative Residency Weekend

Friday 17 May - Sunday 19 May

Ri aimsir chiùin ’s gach meal do dhriùchd,

Bu taitneach leam bhith shuas ann –

Gheibhinn sìth gun diomb’ le còisir-chiùil

A b’ fheàrr na ionntas luachmhor ann.

Dòmhnall Iain Dhonnchaidh

In times of calm with dew on every rise,

My delight was to be up there –

I’d find happy peace with tuneful choir,

Better that precious treasure there.

Donald John MacDonald

Ceòlas are delighted to host a creative residency weekend for singers, songwriters and musicians.  The weekend will be bilingual through the medium of English and Gaelic, and will be hosted in Cnoc Soilleir in Daliburgh.  Cnoc Soilleir, Ceòlas’ bespoke home, is a joint partnership between Ceòlas and the University of the Highlands and Islands – North, West & Hebrides, is situated in Daliburgh, South Uist, surrounded by inspirational landscapes to allow for the space and time to reflect, create and develop songs and tunes. With the idyllic white beaches of the west and the scenic hills encompassing the east, Uist is a haven of creative tranquillity.

We are delighted to welcome two coaches who will run sessions and be on hand to guide participants during the weekend.

Dr Pàdruig Morrison comes from Grimsay and is a contemporary composer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist.  He is one of the founding members of acclaimed band Beinn Lee.  He is steeped in a background of Gaelic oral tradition and folklore.

Dr Alasdair C. Whyte is a Research Fellow in Celtic and Gaelic within the School of Humanities at the University of Glasgow.  He hails from the Isle of Mull and is an acclaimed Gaelic singer, poet, song writer, arranger and presenter.  He has a keen interest in folklore, linguistics, literature and song.
