Talk and Recital with Mary McCarthy

Monday 8 July at 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Free – £5.00

Mary McCarthy is one of the foremost Suzuki teachers in Europe. She is director of National Suzuki Piano Teacher Training Courses in four different countries: Ireland, Scotland, Latvia and Spain. She is also Principal Piano Tutor, BA in Scottish Music, at the Royal Scottish Conservatoire, Glasgow and has been since its inception in 1996. Mary McCarthy’s approach to piano performance and teaching is rooted in her background in Irish traditional music and in her continued involvement with musicians in this field in Ireland and Scotland. Her music-making is passionate, sensitive and rigorous.

Her talk will focus on the work of traditional folk music archivists in Ireland and Scotland. She will introduce the work of Senator Eileen Costello (Eibhlín Bean Mhic Choisdealbha) and her compilation of folk songs from Galway and Mayo, Amhráin mhuighe seola, published in 1919. Mary will also introduce the work of pioneering Scottish-American ehtnomusicologist Margaret Fay Shaw, and her life’s work Folksongs and Folklore of South Uist. This talk will look at the ties between the two women, and Mary’s own meeting with Margaret Fay Shaw. The talk will feature several piano recitals of the songs documented in Amhráin mhuighe seola and Folksongs and Folklore of South Uist.

This talk will be delivered in English.
