New Website Developments

During the past few months Ceòlas have been busy working with the wonderful designers and developers at the web agency Pooka.

We have been particularly keen to do this work with you, the viewer in mind. Both Pooka and Ceòlas hope that you find it easy to use, register for classes and courses and that it provide some added communication until we are able to meet in person again. If you can’t wait till then we are always happy to get your feedback on the new website by email.

Please donate to Ceòlas

Ceòlas is an arts, culture and heritage charity based in the Isle of South Uist, promoting Hebridean music, dance and language. The money raised here will be reinvested into the charity and contribute to our broader programme, including youth fiddle & button box tuition and Gaelic-medium community events.

COVID-19 Update

In line with government guidelines concerning the Covid-19 virus, Ceòlas and its partners will regularly review the situation before promoting or presenting classes, workshops and concerts in person or in community settings. With the latest news that the Western Isles will move to ‘Level 0’, Ceòlas is hopeful that we may be able to present some live events in July with the necessary measures in place: watch this space for further announcements from the 16th of June.

Ceòlas is delighted, however, to be able to present a summer school of classes through online Zoom classes, and look forward to seeing in person at the new Cnoc Soilleir in 2022

The staff at Ceòlas continue to have a mix of working in the office and working from home but way to contact the organisation is via email or phone 01878 700154.

Stay safe!

March update from Cnoc Soilleir

Update: work on the site has halted due to the non-essential nature of the work in line with government instruction during the coronavirus crisis.

The works started on site at the end of January 2020, and phase 1 is due to be complete in the spring of 2021.

The ground works are now almost complete, and the peat dug out and rock broken out  to form the new road and sub base for the building.

The next main activity on site will be installing the ground slab and insulation of the building which will take place from early April.

The steel frame is programmed to be installed towards the end of June, followed by the upper floor structure and external walls and roof.

We had planned to run a series of informal information sessions for the local community in South Uist to keep them up to date with progress and news as the project develops. The current Covid-19 crisis means that we are unable to do this, so for the time being we will keep you posted through the news section on Ceòlas website and on social media.

If you have any further questions or want to know more please do not hesitate to contact Catherine Yeatman the Cnoc Soilleir project manager on

Funds raised to continue Buttons & Bows

Ceòlas has been successful in fundraising for the continuation of the Buttons & Bows project, which seeks to reinvigorate the fiddle and buttons box traditions in Uist amongst a younger generation.

Over £6,000 in funding has been secured from local councillors, the Western Isles Development Trust and the Coop Local Community Fund. Ceòlas have also been selected for a further fundraising round by the Coop Local Community Fund.

This new funding will allow the Buttons & Bows project, which provides weekly tuition to over 50 children in Uist, to continue to run for another year. The project had previously delivered free-of-charge tuition to children since 2015.

Ceòlas would like to thank the funders for their critical support for this project, which would have otherwise been drawn to a close, as well as those Coop members who chose our charity.
