The School
takes a holistic approach to tuition and no single element is complete
without the others. Pipers learn to beat the rhythms of their
strathspeys in a step dancing class while fiddlers learn words to their
tunes through 'mouth music' or puirt a beul. Dancers, in turn, explore
the relationship between their steps and Gaelic song while pipers and
singers discover the fundamental relationship between classical piping
(ceòl mòr) and Gaelic song. This approach leads to a fuller
appreciation of the riches of individual traditions, and how they
connect and interact with each other. The School's approach is simple, but effective: - Participants should be proficient in their first discipline choice.
- The
second choice may well be new to the individual participants. It is
important, however, since an exploration of another discipline helps
generate a better understanding of the links between various aspects of
our culture.
- A
third important element is tuition in Gaelic language and culture.
Gaelic is now available as a Core Subject pitched at complete beginner
or Intermediate. A range of lectures is offered to enhance the
experience of fluent speakers. This element helps to foster an
understanding of Gaelic's influences on song and dance.
