Angus was born in the township of Iochdar, South Uist, in the Outer Hebrides in 1916. It was while serving with the Lovat Scouts in the Faroes during the Second World War that Angus first showed the symptoms of what was to become a long and serious illness. He had become withdrawn and solitary, and in 1946 he was placed in Craig Dunain Psychiatric Hospital near Inverness.

From lengths of plaited grass rope, Angus wove the most extraordinary garments; trousers, jumpers, a vast selection of hats, boots and bags. As well as grass he used straw, leaves and twigs gathered from the hospital grounds. A number of wool garments have also remained intact. His creations transcend craft – there is much more to them than mere functionality, and his careful placement of them in the undergrowth suggests they had for him a greater significance - a secret world where he really lived.

Ceòlas 2012 1-6th July is shaping up to be another fantastic year. Students are coming from Japan, Austria, Romania, Germany, Switzerland as well as the USA. Most of these bookings have come in through the Booth. NEW for 2012: Upgrade your Clarsach skills with Ingrid Henderson who is a” musician of quite outstanding calibre, a virtuoso in terms of sensibility….” who is a highly regarded teacher at home and abroad. Ingrid will be able to join her husband and brother who are both teaching Fiddle at Ceòlas 2012. All the tutors are booked and excitement is growing amongst the local young people with the return of Andrea Boyd to teach Youth Piping. This year Sarah Hoy will teach Youth Fiddle.

Singing tutors for 2012 are Rona Lightfoot, Kathleen MacInnes and Gillebride MacMillan – a strong Uist contingent who are steeped in the language and songs of the place. Adult Piping has also very strong Uist links with Angus MacKenzie and Allan MacDonald. Angus MacKenzie’s skills will strengthen the Cape Breton connection with Dance with Margie Beaton, Frank McConnell and Alison MacLeod. Dawn Beaton will once again represent the Cape Breton Fiddle tradition to ensure that the Dancing night will be spectacular. The musicians for dance, Angus Nicolson, Ewen Henderson and Fin Moore, will support them.

Ceòlas Artist in residence for 2012 is a resident of South Uist with a strong London connection and great change is likely with the exhibition being based around the school and the artist seeking inspiration for the work from the activity going on during Ceòlas week. Marie Melnyczuk has been working in the community and now has her own studio in East Camp in Balivanich.

Tickets for evening events can be booked in advance at Ceòlas office: 01878 700154

Ceolas at Celtic Connections 2012. This was held in the Strathclyde suite in the Royal Concert hall in Glasgow on the 4th of February 2012. The concet was a resounding success with it being sold out for a couple of days before the event so many people were disappointed with having to be turned away because of the lack of tickets. There were more than 500 people in the venue which was a little (!) over capacity!
The concert featured 20 performers of the cream of Gaelic / Highland / Cape Breton talent including Rona Lightfoot and Kathleen MacInnes who also ably performed the task of MC’s for the evening. Other performers were
Angus MacKenzie, Gillebride MacMillan, Allan Henderson, Sarah MacKay, Josie Burgess, Paul McCallum, Fin Moore, Frank McConnell, Angus Nicolson, Calum MacKenzie, Mairead Stewart, Kenneth MacKenzie, Sineag MacIntyre, Sandra Robertson, Allan MacDonald, Dawn Beaton, Iain MacFarlane, Seonaidh MacIntyre.
The evening was enhanced by beautiful slides of Uist throughout the show.
The next major Ceolas event will be in London on the 19th May in the Welsh Centre on 157-163 Gray’s Inn Road, London WC1X 8UE

Concerts

We again had a fantastic line-up for Ceolas 2011. The opening concert kicked off on Sunday evening in St Peter’s Hall which included much of the talent that is to be heard on the Island as well as some of the visiting tutors. The Piping concert on the Monday was outstanding with a feast of piping including Angus MacKenzie, Angus Nicolson, Fin Moore and Calum MacCrimmon. They also performed as the quartet ‘Seudan’, also Allan MacDonald, Andrea Boyd, Seonaidh MacIntyre and more…

The singing concert was led on Wednesday in Southend Hall by Rona Lightfoot, Mairead Stewart and Kathleen MacInnes with special guests. Memorable for all performers and audience alike.

There was a dance in Eriskay Hall on Wednesday Evening.

Thursday saw the ever-popular Fiddle &; Dance night in St Peter’s hall. The evening ran in two shifts with more people arriving as some were departing. The sheer number of people who wanted to dance was in direct competition with the numbers who wanted to play for dancing. It was a memorable evening – may we have many more to come!!

Friday the Ceilidh Mor was SOLD OUT – and no wonder with the level of talent performing. Emma Mac Innes hosted the evening .

There were sessions throughout the week in various venues.

Video clips will be available soon.
