Ashley grew up on Benbecula and North Uist and with piping in her blood. She started playing the chanter at the age of 8. She was taught by the late Calum Campbell of Benbecula and Dòmhnall Bàn MacDonald, a cousin and a great family friend. In Ashley’s early years she was also mentored by her late uncle John MacDonald (Seonaidh a’ Bhàigh) Eilean Fhlodaidh, a renowned button box player around the islands. Ashley joined the Uist Pipe Band around the age of 12 and began travelling to compete in competitions in Lewis and the mainland as well as at home in Uist. She attended summer schools held at The Piping Centre in Glasgow where she was asked to attend a piping boot-camp to join the first ever National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland. Ashley was the first person from the Western Isles to play in this national band. Several years later Ashley moved to Lewis, where she is now based and plays with the Lewis Pipe Band – European Champions in 2017. Ashley has her own independent piping school in Lewis, teaching up to 35 children, as well as being a full-time instructor in Lewis and Harris.
