St Brìghde Lectures

11th January 2018

[:en]To celebrate Latha Fhèill Brìghde (1st February), two lectures (mostly in Gaelic) will be given by Dr Dòmhnall Uilleam Stiùbhart on two of the most famous collectors in Uist: Alexander Carmichael and Marjory Kennedy-Fraser.

Dr Dòmhnall Uilleam Stiùbhart is a Senior Lecturer at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig and course leader for the MSc Material Culture and Gàidhealtachd History. The two collections he will discuss are held at the Centre for Research Collections at the University of Edinburgh. Dòmhnall Uilleam was closely involved with the Carmichael Watson Project and is an expert concerning the collectors of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Alexander Carmichael collecting in Uist, 1st February, 2:30pm, Sgoil an Ìochdair. Carmichael was a famous collector of folkore who compiled the renowned Carmina Gadelica, or Òrtha nan Gàidheal.  Alexander collected numerous treasures from the people of South Uist where he was working as an exciseman between 1864 and 1878. Indeed, he spent several years in residence in an t-Ìochdar, and in this talk Dòmhnall Uilleam Stiùbhart will be discussing the characters Alexander met, and about the blessings, songs, and wonderful stories he heard amongst the people.

Marjory Kennedy-Fraser collecting in Uist & Èirisgeidh, 2nd February, 2pm, Talla Coimhearsnachd Èirisgeidh. In 1905, the noted singer Marjory Kennedy-Fraser came to the Outer Hebrides. In Èirisgeidh, she met Mgr Ailein, Fr Allan MacDonald – she fell in love with the island and its inhabitants. Two years later, Marjory returned to the island, this time with her daughter and a new recording instrument: the graphophone. They spent two weeks recording the people of Èirisgeidh. Although some of the recordings are slightly rough, for the first time in 100 years the people of Èirisgeidh will get to hear what Marjory collected in the island, as well as the voices of their ancestors.

As well as these two lectures, two workshops will take place in Sgoil an Ìochdair and Sgoil Dhalabroig to teach the pupils the art of making the crois Brìghde or ‘St Brigid’s Cross’, which will be taught by Màiri Wilmot.

In addition to our core sponsors, this year’s commemoration of St Brìghde’s Day (Latha Fhèill Brìghde) was supported by Creative Scotland‘s open fund.[:gd]Mun fhèill Brìde, bidh dà òraid sa Ghàidhlig le Dòmhnall Uilleam Stiùbhart ‘s e a-mach air dithist den luchd-chruinneachaidh as ainmeile a bha ag obair ann an Uibhist: Alasdair MacGilleMhìcheil agus Marsaili Cheanadach-Fhrìseil.

‘S e Àrd-Òraidiche aig Sabhal Mòr Ostaig a th’ anns an Oll Dòmhnall Uilleam Stiùbhart, agus bidh e a’ stiùireadh a’ chùrsa MSc Cultar Dùthchasach agus Eachdraidh na Gàidhealtachd an sin. Tha an dà chruinneachadh air am bi e a’ bruidhinn le Ionad Cruinneachaidhean Rannsachaidh aig Oilthigh Dhùn Èideann. Tha e an sàs gu dlùth ri Pròiseact MhicGilleMhìcheil MhicBhatair agus ann a bhith a’ rannsachadh luchd-cruinneachaidh an 19mh & 20mh linn.

Alasdair MacGilleMhìcheil a’ cruinneachadh ann an Uibhist, 1d latha den Ghearran, 2:30f, Sgoil an Ìochdair. ’S e fear-cruinneachaidh beul-aithris ainmeil a bh’ ann an Alasdair MacGilleMhìcheil, a rinn an leabhar cliùiteach Carmina Gadelica, no Òrtha nan Gàidheal. Fhuair Alasdair iomadach ulaidh phrìseil bho mhuinntir Uibhist a Deas far an robh e ag obair mar ghàidsear eadar 1864 agus 1878. Gu dearbh, chuir e seachad grunn bhliadhnaichean a’ fuireach ann an sgìre an Ìochdair, agus anns an òraid seo bidh Dòmhnall Uilleam a’ bruidhinn mu na caractaran ris an do choinnich Alasdair an sin, agus mu na beannachdan, na h-òrain, agus na sgeulachdan iongantach a chuala e aig muinntir an àite.

Marjory Kennedy-Fraser a’ cruinneachadh ann an Uibhist & Èirisgeidh, 2ra latha den Ghearran, 2f, Talla Coimhearsnachd Èirisgeidh. Ann an 1905, thàinig a’ bhan-sheinneadar ainmeil Marsaili Cheanadach-Fhriseal air chuairt do na h-Eileanan Siar. Ann an Èirisgeidh choinnich i ri Maighstir Ailein Dòmhnallach – agus thuit i ann an gaol ris an eilean agus ris na h-eileanaich. Dà bhliadhna as dèidh sin, thill Marsaili don eilean, an turas-sa le a nighinn agus, còmhla riutha, inneal-clàraidh ùr àraid: an graphophone. Chuireadh an dithist aca seachad dà sheachdain a’ clàradh òrain bho mhuinntir an eilein. Ged a tha feadhainn de na clàraidhean car robach, airson a’ chiad uair ann an còrr agus 100 bliadhna bidh cothrom aig muinntir Èirisgeidh cluinntinn mu mar a chaidh do Mharsaili anns an eilean, agus èisteachd ri guthan an sinnsirean cuideachd.

A bharrachd air an dà òraid seo, bidh bùthan-obrach a’ dol ann an Sgoil an Ìochdair agus Sgoil Dhalabroig ag ionnsachadh dhan chlann mar a nì iad crois Brìghde. ‘S e Màiri Flùraichean a bhios a’ gabhail nan seiseanan sin.

A bharrachd air an luchd-mhaoineachaidh choitcheann againn, tha comharradh na fèill Brìghde a’ faighinn taic-airgid bho mhaoin fhosgailte Alba Chruthachail.
