Uist, Mallaig and London – a busy month for Ceòlas

22nd May 2017

[:en]May has been an extremely busy month for Ceòlas, running events all over the country in the past month. Our programme of events kicked off on Friday 5th May with the ‘Òran is Fonn’ song conference, during which we had the pleasure of giving local people another chance to see Rona MacDonald’s cèilidh play ‘Fuaigh’. Rona was joined by Gillebrìde MacMillan and local singing group ‘Guthan an Iar’, as well as around 80 people from the local community.

Students on the GIfT course (Gaelic Immersion for Teachers) at the University of Strathclyde got the chance to learn about the tradition of puirt-à-beul and dance with Naomi Harvey and Dr Will Lamb (University of Edinburgh) on Saturday. This was followed by a highly successful concert at Talla Chàirinis, featuring South Uist’s own Kathleen MacInnes. She was joined by two acclaimed musicians from Ireland, piper Tiarnán Ó Duinnchinn and harpist Laoise Kelly. We closed the weekend’s events with a singing circle in the Lochboisdale Hotel on the Sunday evening.

A wealth of other Ceòlas events followed throughout the month. Singing group ‘Guthan an Iar’ performed at the annual Gaelic mass at St. Mary Moorefields in City of London. This was preceded by a cèilidh with the London Gaelic Society. Over the course of the weekend, more than 90 people attended these special events. On Friday 19th May, the ‘Buttons & Bows’ group held a concert to display the skills of young people who have benefitted from box and fiddle tuition throughout the life of the successful scheme. The project has been funded by the People’s Health Lottery for the past two years, but Ceòlas is now seeking other sponsors in order to keep the scheme going.

This past weekend (20th), 14 people from Uist travelled to Mallaig to perform music and song with friends from far and wide. The group were based between the West Highland Hotel and the Marine Bar for the day. Thank you to all who came and played/sang with us over the course of the day.

All of this has been happening while Ceòlas is working hard with our architects to bring the Cnoc Soilleir Project to fruition. We are currently seeking a Project Manager and a Technical Contracts Coordinator. Information is available at www.ceolas.co.uk/gd/2017/05/advertised-positions-cnoc-soilleir/.

[:gd]B’ e mìos loma-làn a bh’ ann airson a h-uile duine aig Ceòlas am mìos mu dheireadh, agus iad air a bhith a’ riuth thachartasan feadh na dùthcha rè na Cèitein. Thòisich cùisean air 5mh Cèitean leis a’ cho-labhairt ‘Òran is Fonn’, far an robh sinn a chur fàilte air iomadach caraid, seann agus ùr. Bha sinn air leth toilichte cothrom eile a thoirt seachad airson ‘Fuaigh’ fhaicinn, dealbh-chluiche le Rona Dhòmhnallach, Gillebrìde MacIlleMhaoil agus a’ bhuidheann-seinn ionadail ‘Guthan an Iar’.

Ghabh Oileanaich GIfT (Bogaidh Gàidhlig airson Luchd-Teagaisg) bho Oilthigh Shrath Chluaidh pàirt ann am bùth-obrach shònraichte le Naomi Harvey agus an t-Oll Will Lamb, anns an robh iad ag ionnsachadh mu thradaiseanan a thaobh puirt agus dannsa. Bha mu 100 duine an làthair aig consairt le Kathleen NicAonghais, am pìobaire Tiarnán Ó Duinnchinn agus a’ chlàrsair Laoise Kelly air Oidhche Shathairne ann an Talla Chàirinis. Chuir sinn crìoch air a’ cho-labhairt le cearcall seinn ann an Taigh-Òsta Loch Baghasdail feasgar Didòmhnaich.

Lean pailteas de thachartasan Cheòlais eile tron Chèitean. Thadhail ‘Guthan an Iar’ air Lunnain airson Aifreann Ghàidhlig aig St. Mary Moorfields ann an Lunnain Mheadhain. Cuideachd, bha cèilidh ann leis a’ Chomunn Ghàidhlig an Lunnain. Thachair am buidheann ri còrr is 90 daoine nuair a bha iad ann.

A bharrachd air sin, bha an consairt ‘Buttons & Bows’ a’ tachairt ann an Sgoil an Ìochdair Dihaoine 19mh far an robhar a’ taisbeanadh na dh’ionnsaich na sgoilearan. Bha an sgeama seo air leth soirbheachail airson bogsa agus fìdheall a theagasg do dhaoine òga. Gu mì-fhortanach, tha a’ mhaoin a’ tighinn gu ceann. Fhuair Ceòlas taic-airgid bho ‘The People’s Health Lottery’ airson 2 bhliadhna, ach feuchaidh Ceòlas ri maoineachadh eile a lorg a chùmas ‘Buttons & Bows’ a’ dol.

An deireadh-seachdain seo chaidh, chaidh 14 Uibhistich a-null a Mhalaig air an aiseag airson ceòl a chluich do mhuinntir tìr-mòr, eadar an Taigh-òsda Gàidhealtachd an Iar agus am Marine Bar airson an là. Bu mhath leinn taing a thoirt seachad do gach duine a thàinig air an turas, gu sònraichte na feadhna a chluich ceòl agus a sheinn òrain còmhla rinn.

Ann an naidheachd eile, tha sinn uile air a bhith a’ tachairt fhad sa tha sinn ag obair gu dìcheallach leis na h-ailtirean airson am pròiseact Cnoc Soilleir a thoirt gu buil. Chaidh sanasachdan obrach a-mach airson Manaidsear Pròiseact agus Co-òrdanaiche Chùmhnantan Teicneigeach am mìos seo. Tha fiosrachadh ri fhaighinn aig www.ceolas.co.uk/gd/2017/05/advertised-positions-cnoc-soilleir/.
